In this project I was the experience lead, brainstorming the execution of the design with our design team as well as co-ordinating the delivery of the responsive microsite and lead our presentations and feedback sessions with the client.
SHOWCASE THE BATON AND IT’S JOURNEY - AND DO IT FAST
The client wanted to hero the baton in a similar fashion as Borobi, but they also wanted to host a lot more creative content around the creative process of crafting the baton so we needed to extend the structure and solution to cater for different content needs. There was also an entirely new section needed to show off the baton’s travel route and provide details on all the stops that the baton will do - over 300 days of travel both internationally and in Australia. With the short turnaround expected, we needed to think creatively on how to approach this.
LEVERAGE AND BUILD ON OUR FOUNDATION
To provide consistency across the microsite experiences as well as leverage efficiencies we used the foundation created for Borobi as to how we would hero the physical baton and then spent our creativity brainstorming how we best could showcase the global and local route given the quick turnaround the client was looking for with this site.
We leveraged Google Maps to visualise the route and customised the design to align with the client’s offline assets. For phase 1 we went with a dark theme to allow the baton to really "pop", whether as for phase 2 we updated to a lighter theme to work in stronger alignment with the rest of the site. During the second phase we also ideated around solutions for how to navigate between International and domestic information to allow for seamless browsing.
QUEEN'S BATON RELAY - PHASE 1
Below you'll find designs of the key features for phase 1.
QUEEN'S BATON RELAY - PHASE 2
For the launch of the domestic route we also needed to hero the Baton bearer nomination process, as well as provide a more flexible experience once the baton started it's long journey.
The long scrolling experience just wasn't the right model anymore so we took a new approach and designed a landing page where we could feature content depending on what phase the baton was in: Nomination process, International route or Domestic route. We also updated the colour theming to better fit within the GC2018 website.
The Baton page still features it's darker theme though, since we still want the boundless colours of the baton to stand out.
A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!
The reveal of the Queen’s Baton Relay followed the success of Borobi, and it has been a truly amazing experience to be part of this historic event and to be on-site at the Gold Coast for both reveals to see peoples reaction and to be part of the celebrations.
